Arup Banerji is the Regional Country Director for Eastern Europe and formerly the Regional Country Director for the European Union for the World Bank. He currently oversees the World Bank’s portfolio of investment, strategy and knowledge work in Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus. Prior to this, Arup was the World Bank’s global Senior Director for Social Protection, Labor and Jobs, and Senior Advisor/Chief Economist of the Independent Evaluation Group. Arup is the author of a wide range of books and scholarly articles, including overseeing the World Bank’s 2013 annual flagship research publication, the World Development Report on Jobs.
He is the author of books and academic papers on economic growth, jobs and labor markets, investment climate, public finance, human development, social protection, institutional development, poverty reduction and inequality. Prior to joining the World Bank, he taught at the Center for Development Economics at Williams College, Massachusetts, USA. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania, USA.
